Drug Scandal Jolts Showbiz Industry,

Drug Scandal Jolts Showbiz Industry
Several More Top Entertainers on List of Suspects

Police are expanding their investigation into the smuggling and use of drugs involving movie stars and models.

In the latest drug bust of entertainers, police booked popular film star Ju Ji-hun, 27, on suspicion of drug use and arrest warrants were sought for actress Yun Seol-hee, 28, and model Ye Hak-young, 26, for alleged smuggling ecstasy tablets and ketamine into the country from Japan. Two other residents were booked on similar suspicions.

``Besides the suspects on the list we have secured, there are likely more, given the amount of drugs smuggled. Further investigations are unavoidable,'' an officer of the Seoul Metropolitan Policy Agency said.

Police officiers said the entertainers appear to have been tempted to use drugs on assumption that that ecstasy and other drugs kill the appetite, helping them reduce their weight. Ecstasy is a mildly hallucinogenic amphetamine and the most popular illegal drug in Korea, while ketamine, also illegal here, is a veterinary medicine that has a strong hallucinatory effect on humans in dilute doses.

Experts said that more popular stars are blacklisted as suspects who used the drugs smuggled in by Yun.

The latest scandal is jolting the entertainment industry, already reeling following the suicide of actress Jang Ja-yeon, who left a note accusing media and entertainment firms' presidents of forcing her to have sex with them.

Ju is a hallyu (Korean wave) star in Japan and is now expected to lose opportunities to appear in Japanese media, let alone appearances on domestic TV programs or movies. He was scheduled to have a fan meeting in Tokyo next month.

Ju is a model-turned-actor who debuted in the 2006 drama ``Princess Hours,'' with the role of a crown prince of Korea. He recently starred in the movies ``Antique'' and ``The Naked Kitchen'' and the musical ``Don Juan.'' He was going to shoot the drama ``Tokyo Tower'' next month, but the role is going to be given to another actor.

Ju admitted to using drugs, saying he took them when he was drunk at a party at Ye's house, according to police. Since both Ju and Ye are models-turned-actors, the entertainment industry expects other colleagues to be implicated in the scandal.

Many fans are disappointed. ``I was surprised at the news of Ju's drug use. Drug scandals involving entertainers seem to never end,'' said Kim Dong-hyun, 28, a graduate student.

Many other entertainers have also been caught for drug use. Actress Hwang Su-jung was caught using philopon ― an amphetamine ― in November 2001. She was known for her elegant image, but an attempted comeback was unsuccessful even years after the scandal. Singer Psy, or Park Jae-sang, was caught in the same month for smoking marijuana. Actresses Sung Hyun-ah was caught for taking ecstasy in 2002; Kim Boo-seon for marijuana in 2004; and Ko Ho-kyeong for marijuana in 2006.

The drug busts of entertainers continued last year as well, including jazz vocalist Pak Sun-zoo and Steve Kim of hip hop group Uptown.

Some entertainers have campaigned for legalizing the use of drugs such as marijuana. Kim Boo-seon and singer Shin Hae-chul, both caught for drug use, have insisted that marijuana should be legalized in Korea.

However, the difference this time is that Yun and Ye smuggled the narcotics themselves ― police believe they did this to limit the possibility of exposure.

Some experts cited relatively light punishment on drug users as one of the key reasons behind the scandals. Some have successfully returned to the business years afterward.

Bae Kuk-nam, a culture critic, said, ``They can make a return after drug scandals but their wrongdoing is engraved in people's memories.''

After that incident the members would 'rather support alot of our seniors'. Super Junior explanation to that response was 'After broadcasting, we would usually hang around our juniors and they would cheer us on. We then laughed.'

A'ST1, debuted as a group in April 2008 with their debut teaser 'Down Super Junior', which has already become a hot topic back then. Like Super Junior, which is a large idol group full of members will become a 'teaser' image which will be open to the public an aspiration.

The group pointed out that 'The 2 groups are now close after the release of the 'teaser video' even if there was an uproar by the fans which was caused back then'. Super Junior fans still cheer up for their idol when they are performing on stage.

KARA,make a voice magazine service just for their fans

To be able to become closer to their fans, girl group KARA started their Voice Magazine Service.

Through Voice Magazine, the KARA members can leave voice messages during their free time or when they're on-the-go. This will then be directly sent to their fans through a phone call, which gives off the feeling that they have just received a call from the members.

This phone call will be able to tell the fans how the members are feeling at that moment, or what had happened to them that day and also alert the fans of their schedule. Because everything is done in real-time, the fans will feel like they are actually together with KARA.

On April 18, this service was made available and more than 5000 fans subscribed to their Voice Magazine, and the messages that they left during their schedules was well-received by everyone.

The fans who received the phone calls said "I feel like I was actually talking to KARA", "Because it is real-time, we don't know when we'll receive the call so I feel nervous and excited for their messages", "I feel like KARA has become my close friend because they call, just like how friends call up each other", showing the enjoyment the fans felt when they received the calls. On top of everything else, there were also fans who tearfully said that "I was so shocked when I received the call that I actually hung up on them."

This service which enables stars to leave messages to their fans is fastly becoming a distinct community where the celebrities and their fans can feel closer to one another.

The application is free, however, the subsribers will have to pay for the calls made as these are collect calls. For more information, visit Send Voice (www.sendvoice.co.kr) or KARA's homepage (http://kara.dspenter.com)

Release date nears for Blood: The Last Vampire

(What’s with all the vampires lately, huh?)

Although the Hollywood debut for Jeon Ji-hyun (or Gianna Jun) was announced over a year and a half ago, there hasn’t been a whole lot of news about it. Now that Blood: The Last Vampire’s worldwide release is coming up, though, the press whirl is starting to kick back into gear with more news, interviews, and other promotional tidbits.

In the action flick based on the popular manga (which also had an anime film), Jeon plays “Saya,” a young vampire hunter who happens to be a vampire herself. The film is scheduled for a simultaneous American, European, and Asian theatrical release on June 11.

Oshii Mamoru, the writer of the Blood books, recently praised Jeon to the press, saying, “It seems as though the Saya I had thought up walked right out of the original. Her acting is really great.”

Jeon’s participation in Blood is part of the reason why she hasn’t been very active in the Korean industry for the past two years, aside from briefly promoting her 2008 film The Man Who Was Superman, which co-starred Hwang Jung-min. Before that, she was in the film Daisy in 2006 and Windstruck in 2004, both of which were disappointing at the box office — not necessarily for being bad movies, but because expectations were so high after she starred in the super-popular romantic comedy My Sassy Girl (which has since gotten its own (failed) U.S. remake).

I’m not familiar with the Blood/Vampire franchise, but my initial impressions from reports and stills is that it looks gorgeous, and Jeon really does look the part. What with a whole slew of Hallyu actors trying to make the jump to Hollywood, I’ve been kinda cynical as to their crossover chances, but this one looks promising, and I’m interested in seeing how it pans out.

“Mother”’s mother-son pair at film press conference

Aww, how sweet.

The majority of photos coming out of the April 27 press conference for the film Mother [λ§ˆλ„] are focused on Won Bin — but you can’t really blame the press, because it has been so freaking long since he has been in the spotlight, and fans have been waiting for years for him to make his onscreen comeback.

Add to that his well-loved co-star, veteran actress Kim Hye-ja, and the return of film director Bong Jun-ho after making a huge splash with 2006’s The Host, and you’ve got the year’s most-anticipated film. (Well, most-anticipated next to Park Chan-wook’s Thirst, which is probably the only other film to challenge Mother for that distinction. Both Mother and Thirst have been accepted to screen at Cannes Film Festival this year, incidentally.)

(Also, not only has it been a long while since Won Bin has been in the spotlight, it’s also been ages that he’s looked so smiling and happy. It’s kind of a relief, actually.)

The movie’s production press conference was held at 11am in Seoul, in advance of its May 28 theatrical release.

The film portrays a mother’s quest to clear her simple-minded but pure-hearted son after he is wrongly accused of a murder. As the titular mother, Kim Hye-ja (who most recently won an acting Daesang for last year’s drama series Mom’s Dead Upset) said of her costar: “Won Bin is an actor who will be great.”

She also described him as courteous and quiet, giving her “a really good first impression.” His character in the film is mentally handicapped, but she explained that “to his mother, he isn’t lacking at all.”

Meanwhile, director Bong Jun-ho addressed the constant comparisons that Mother draws to Thirst, Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s new movie (although the plots are nothing alike, since the latter is a vampire horror film). Bong said, “It’s an honor for me, but it’s possible that director Park Chan-wook dislikes it. He debuted almost eight years before I did and is ten years older.” He joked, drawing a soccer comparison, “If I’m of Park Ji-sung’s generation, director Park is of Choi Sun-ho’s.”

Bong went on to praise Thirst, saying, “I saw Thirst at the preview screening. Needless to say, it’s a great masterpiece. It doesn’t need any further description.”
